Anonymous, monogrammed JHVD (?)
Late 19th or early 20th century; Netherlands
Oil on panel in a wooden frame

Approximate size: 7.5 (h) x 8 (w) x 1.5 (d) in.

This Dutch still-life painting of fish—belonging to the pronkstillevens genre—is articulated in a manner reminiscent of the work of Abraham Van Beijeren, active in The Hague during the 17th century.  This lovely painting is rich with textures and a pleasant neutral palette of ambers and dark hues.  Framed in a lovely ebony toned frame with gilt inner fillet.

Condition commensurate with age.  Minor nicks and dings to the frame. Some craquelure present along the surface of the painting with possible in-filling over the exposed gesso.  A few minor paint losses along the upper margin due to a previous frame mounting and along a few areas of the overall painted surface.
