19TH CENTURY FRAMED DUTCH EUROPEAN MARINE SCENE PAINTING
19TH CENTURY FRAMED DUTCH EUROPEAN MARINE SCENE PAINTING
Anonymous
Possibly Netherlands; late 19th century
Oil on canvas in giltwood frame
Approximate size: 22 (h) x 31.5 (w) x 3.5 (d) in.
The present painting depicts a traditional Dutch genre maritime scene of the late 19th century. It features a brig, probably a merchant sailing ship, while a steam liner and sailing vessel appear in the distance along the horizon. The scene features a delightful color palette of muted blue and warm grey hues.
The signature at the lower left, ‘van de Velde,’ is a later addition and seeks to associate this painting with the maritime subjects produced by Willem van de Velde the Elder and his sons. However, the painting is certainly late 19th century in origin, adjudged by its quality as well as the steam liner faintly reproduced along the scene’s horizon.
The painting is set in a late 19th century frame, not original to the painting, and is inset with a modern silvered filet.
Condition: The painting has traces of aging varnish along the surface providing a handsome patina. There is some wear to the paint along the extreme edges of the canvas as well as the presence of minor craquelure along its surface. The giltwood frame has various repaired and unrepaired losses.
